Mark your calendar:

Friday, August 03, 2012

10:00:00 AM – 12:30:00 PM

• If I am interviewing consenting participants, can I use the information or images posted on their Facebook pages as data? Can I use information in their avatars’ profiles? Or their tweets/blogs/websites?

• If I recruit participants online, how can I be sure the person I am interviewing is who I think he is? And is over 18?

• How do I know what is “public” versus “private” space online? If I want to observe people in an online community, do I need to announce that I am a researcher and obtain informed consent from the people who post?

• Is an avatar a “human subject”? Are researchers responsible for protecting the online identity of participants?

• If I want to interview in Skype versus in text chat do I have to record the visual, as well as audio exchange with the participant?

These and many other questions about research design and research ethics arise when scholars decide to conduct qualitative interviews or observations online. Those who teach research methods, oversee research or evaluate research proposals and completed studies increasingly confront these issues as more students choose to use communications technologies to collect data. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore emerging research dilemmas and current thinking about ethical research practices.

Janet Salmons will draw on examples presented in Online Interviews in Real Time (Salmons, 2010) and Cases in Online Interview Research (Salmons, 2012) and explain her E-Interview Research Framework, an inter-related set of key questions to consider and models to use when designing, or reviewing a design, for online qualitative data collection. She will also share other resources, including ethical guidelines adopted by the Association of Internet Researchers.

I recently conducted the first stage of a study about women entrepreneurs and communications technologies. In what ways does online communication and collaboration influence the options women see for themselves and their businesses? I am interested in how women entrepreneurs use which technology, as well as the kinds of collaborative practices that emerge.

I am interested in businesses where online communication is used to promote, develop or sell “real world” goods and services (like real estate, landscaping/gardening or health care) as well as businesses where online communication is used to promote, develop or sell “cyberspace” goods and services (online teaching, facilitating, consulting, designing avatars or Facebook games, etc.)

I am interested in communications technologies, not writing, accounting or productivity software. I am interested in use of synchronous (online meeting platforms, video calls or videoconferencing, chatting/texting, etc.) or asynchronous tools (Facebook, email, websites, forums, blogs/micoblogs, wikis, etc.).

Since this is a qualitative study I am interested in experiences, thoughts, perceptions, ideas and feelings about what works and what is important in regard to communications technology and the business.

I presented some of the findings from this research at the Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management conference. A recording of the E-Research on E-Entrepreneurs: Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital Age presentation is posted here. Thirteen themes emerged that will form the basis of the next stage of inquiry:

Pull is stronger than Push

Creative/quality control is more important than business growth.

Grow out, not up and down

Women entrepreneurs make more entrepreneurs.

Choice of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) is made strategically.

Choice of ICTs is made strategically.

Free or cheap ICTs work.

Asynchronous or near-synchronous communications work

Relationships matter, and they are sustained with regular communication.

Direct communication leads to positive ROI.

Choice of ICT depends on the nature of the relationship.

ICTS can increase efficiency…or increase distractions.

Intellectual property and data privacy are considerations when choosing/using ICTs..

Plans for future ICT use includes use of media.

This study is the basis for a chapter in a forthcoming book from Praeger edited by Louise Kelley: Women Entrepreneurship: New Management and Leadership Models.

I intend to build on this research with a second stage of interviews starting next fall. If you are a woman e-entrepreneur interested in participating, please use the response form below or contact me at jsalmons(at)vision2lead.com.

From the OII website:

Survey research on Internet use in Britain has highlighted two dramatic and interrelated shifts in how users are accessing the Internet. From our early study of Internet use in 2003, the primary pattern of Internet access was based on the use of a personal computer in one’s household, and at times complemented by similar access at the workplace, linked to the Internet through a modem or broadband connection. The major change in access since 2003 was around the speed of connections, with the major trend being the uptake of broadband Internet until 2009, by when nearly all Internet users used a broadband connection. This dominant pattern of Internet access characterizes the ‘first generation user’ in Britain. In contrast to this first generation of Internet users, there is a new pattern of Internet access developing through the use of a growing variety of devices than enable increasing mobility. Laptops, smart phones, tablet computers, and readers are providing a multitude of entry points that most often complement but occasionally replace the centrality of the household personal computer. We call those who link to the Internet in this increasingly mobile style as the ‘next generation users’ (NGUs). Who are the next generation users, the more tethered users, and non-users? Additionally, socioeconomic divides and the choices of many individuals not to use the Internet are socially distributed in ways that reignite issues over digital divides in society.
