Online Interviews in Real Time

 Online Interviews in Real Time considers theoretical and practical dimensions of emerging online interview approaches.

It is available in print and now in CourseSmart eTextbook. Coming November 2011 in Kindle ebook version!

Online Interviews in Real Time explores the use of synchronous communication technologies for research interviews. These technologies allow for four key types of interview exchange:

  • Text-based chat through instant messaging or texting;
  • Audio and video through videoconferencing or video calls;
  • Audio, video, shared whiteboard and other tools in online meeting spaces; or
  • Exchanges in 3-D Immersive environments.

Interviews using these technologies generate complex verbal and visual data. With a focus on these four types, the book explores ways to design studies, prepare for and ethically conduct real-time interviews online.

Each chapter contains well-researched discussion of related qualitative research principles that serve as a foundation for thinking through key issues and practical steps for online interview researchers.

Visit the Study Site for a syllabus and additional resources. A BlackBoard/WebCT course cartridge is available on request from Sage Publications, making it easy to offer a related Masters or PhD course.
