In print, e-book and CourseSmart editions from Sage Publications
Overview
Cases in Online Interview Research is a selective collection of peer-reviewed case studies and critiques. Ten researchers were each invited to create a case study of the online research dimension of their research in a consistent format that encourages cross-case comparisons. Data for these studies were collected through interviews in social media spaces, through videoconferencing and in online meeting spaces, and in virtual worlds. Their cases offer the opportunity to scrutinize the inner workings of research design and conduct, illuminating the steps, decisions, joys, frustrations and discoveries of scholarly e-research interviews. The book is organized to promote dialogue about online interview research, and to provide guidelines for those who design—or review—studies using this emergent method.
Each case is followed by two commentaries from a peer contributor and from the editor. Critiques offer a sense of dialogue within the book, a dialogue readers can continue in the classroom, in assignments, or in discussions of the interplay of emerging technologies and emergent research. The editor’s analyses of each case, and the metasynthesis of all cases in the final chapter, are based on her original
E-Interview Research Framework.
The E-Interview Research Framework is the basis for analyzing a study’s research design, ethical issues and approach for using communications technologies to collect data with interviews and related observations. The framework includes eight inter-related categories
with key questions.
The international group of researchers represents diverse disciplines, including business, education, psychology, climate science, communications, museum studies and health. They use varied qualitative methodologies including case study, grounded theory, action research, and phenomenology.
Cases in Online Interview Research is can be used in conjunction with Salmons 2010 book, Online Interviews in Real Time, which provides both theoretical and practical steps for using the interactive Web 2.0 for dynamic interviews in text-based, videoconference, meeting space or 3D immersive environments.
